Is there any student photographer out there who will not mind working for free? I will buy the films and pay for the prints you get to photograph guests at an upscale nYc party. You also get to attend the party free, enjoy the light refreshments and live entertainment.

i use a dslr and have done pretty well looking to get better

It looks like he would be happy to give you a shot at this.
You might try to work for another professional photographer to learn? There are tricks and things to learn that cannot be self taught and being an assistant is a great opportunity to learn. That said, you can get online lessons that can help too.
